Fine and Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral and Watchspring Decorations, attributed to Abial Price, Middletown Point (now Matawan), NJ, second quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with a large flower flanked by swags and surrounded by looping cobalt lines. Reverse decorated with a slip-trailed "2" flanked by swags and underscored by a looping line. Undersides of handles decoration with highly-unusual variants on the "watchspring" motif, a link to a popular decoration used by New Jersey potters decades before this jar was made. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a Texas collection consigned to this auction. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
