Possibly Unique Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Incised Signature "G. Halm," Stamped "BREWER & HALM / HAVANA," New York State origin, circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, tall collar with semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed tulip plant with spotted blossom and leaves. Underside incised in script "G. Halm" in large letters with flourish below. This jar is possibly the only hand-signed example of Brewer & Halm stoneware known. William Ketchum, in his seminal work, The Potters and Potteries of New York State, states that there are several New York State potters named Halm, and that the most likely members of the Halm family to pot in Havana were George and Joseph Halm (Ketchum, p. 325). We know from this jar's bold signature on the underside that George Halm was involved in Havana. Excellent condition with two minor chips on inner rim where a lid would rest, and a minor handle chip.
