Rare Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS," New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical form with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly slip-trailed design of a crested bird with large eye and nicely-detailed wing, perched in a wreath. Slip-trailed "3." to right of bird. Cobalt stripes through maker's mark. Excellent color with dark, crisp cobalt against a light clay ground. Includes original salt-glazed lid, stamped "3". Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Southern U.S. Professionally-restored rim chip on left side of front. 2" salt drip on left side of jar's front. A small chip on inner rim where lid rests and a minor stone on interior of rim area. A 1 5/8" shallow chip to edge of lid, along with two other small rim chips. A 1 5/8" faint line to lid.
