Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "Jas. Hamilton / & Co. / Greensboro / Pa.," circa 1875, finely-potted, squat-shaped pitcher with tall, flaring collar embellished with tooled banding at the rim. Body decorated with James Hamilton maker's mark stenciling between two freehand stripes. Collar decorated with large freehand stripes and dashes along the spout. Excellent form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, acquired in Maryland years ago. Heavy chipping to spout. Several rim chips. Chip to side of handle. A few base chips. Hairlines on underside, continuing onto base of pitcher and extending several inches horizontally at base. H 9 5/8".
