Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Decoration of a Bird with Worm, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," New York State origin, circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a finely slip-trailed design of a bird with turned head, holding a worm in its beak, perched on a tree branch. Excellent detail to bird's body, including striping to head and speckling to breast and stomach. Slip-trailed "5" above bird. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's. Churn includes an Albany-slip-glazed lid. Excellent decoration, form, and maker. Significant restoration to churn involving reverse, left side, and collar. Additional restoration to front, involving collar, shoulder, and area surrounding much of bird decoration. Restoration does not touch the decoration. Minor chips to interior where the lid rests. Approximately 2" flake to edge of lid.
