Three-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and spotted body, reclining between a fence and a distant pine tree. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent decoration with very nice color. Significant restoration to exfoliation on reverse, sides, and base of front. Some additional filled and colored spots to undecorated areas directly below pine tree and deer. Restoration does not touch the cobalt. Some restored chips and/or flakes to interior of rim. Some exfoliation to underside.
