Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Bold Cobalt Decoration of a Flying Bird within a Wreath, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly-brushed design of a spread-winged bird surrounded by slip-trailed flowering wreath with brushed leaves. A highly-unusual design for this maker, exhibiting outstanding color. Restoration to rim. Restored cracks extending through top half of left wing and touching left edge of a leaf on the wreath. Restoration to shoulder area surrounding left wing. Rim chip and small rim nick on reverse. 4" hairline from rim on front.
