Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock with Lid, Both Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical crock with footed base, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt swag design on the front and back, applied over whitish slip. Shoulder impressed with John Bell maker's mark. Lid with tooled line around circumference, decorated with brushed cobalt swags and stamped with John Bell maker's mark on underside. Crock with two top-to-bottom cracks from rim, rim chips, and a few firing flaws at or near base. Lid with numerous chips including a chip to knob.
