Rare and Fine Sewertile Duck Doorstop, Signed "WAGONER," American Sewer Tile Pipe Company, Midwestern U.S. origin, early 20th century, figure of a duck with raised wing and tail tips, the head nicely-executed with rounded cheeks and ball-shaped eyes. Underside incised "WAGONER". This doorstop is attributed to one of the Wagoners associated with the Brazil, Indiana plant of the American Sewer Pipe Company, which had factories in several states and whose workers often competed in contests between themselves in producing sewer tile folk art. This company was started as the Monarch Sewer Pipe Company in 1884 and when sold to American Sewer Pipe Company grew to thirty kilns. At its apex, it was the largest sewer pipe manufacturer in the state. Provenance: Jack and Susan Batdorff Collection; purchased from Ned Pennington in 2006.
