Scarce Large-Sized Sewertile Figure of an Owl, Incised "EJE," Edward J.Ellwood (1926-1998), Tuscarawas County, Ohio, mid 20th century, finely-molded figure of an owl perched on a stump with deeply-impressed circular eyes, wide incised line detail to wings, back, and breast, and thinner intricate incising to face. Incised on interior of stump "EJE" for Edward J. Ellwood. Ellwood is probably the best known and most-sought-after molder and finisher of sewer tile folk art. Owls were one of his favorite subjects. A particularly fine and impressive example. Provenance: Jack and Susan Batdorff Collection; Ex-Paul and Barbara Carpenter Collection. Excellent condition with a chip to one horn. H 14 1/8".
