Very Rare Miniature Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Stripe Decoration, Stenciled "T.D.H.," T.D. Harden, Palatine, WV, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with four brushed cobalt stripes. Midsection decorated with the stenciled initials "T. D. H.," for T.D. Harden of Palatine, WV. The form is modeled after Harden jars with a capacity of three gallons or more. It is the only Palatine miniature we have seen, likely made as a salesman's sample or toy. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Western PA. Two long, thin sealed cracks from rim. a small surface chip near base. Some other short, faint lines from rim. 3/4" and 5/8" chips from rim. Losses to handles. H 3 /4".
