Rare Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Star Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jar with narrow opening accented with a tooled line, the front decorated with a band of five stenciled stars, the center star with hollow center and brushed cobalt dot. Body of jar decorated with five brushed cobalt stripes. Excellent size form, and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Wisconsin. Drilled hole in underside with four very faint lines extending off of it. Three small rim chips. Contact marks to left and right sides of front. Faint, in-the-firing 1 1/2" surface line to shoulder. H 9".
