Unusual Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Quail Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a quail with turned head standing beside a shrub. Unusual heavy feather detail covering the bird's entire body. Slip-trailed "3" to right of maker's mark. Sealed 5 1/2" and 5" cracks from rim on reverse, with one crack including a rim chip. Some exfoliation to reverse and side of crock. 2 1/4" crack on underside, extending 7 1/2" up front of crock, through tip of bird's tail and plant.
