Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Turkey Decoration, Stamped "LYONS," Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a turkey with turned head, striped neck, and nicely-detailed wing, standing on a stylized ground. Slip-trailed "2" at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A highly unusual design on American stoneware, and the first example of a turkey we have seen by this desirable New York State maker. Heavy flaking to base, primarily on side and reverse. A few other flakes to midsection. 9 1/2" crack from rim on side of crock, curving onto reverse. Chip to front of rim. Salt drip to shoulder. Faint 3 1/2" hairline on far right side of crock's front. Small chip to underside at edge. Minor nicks and wear to interior of rim.
