Outstanding One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with squared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly-brushed clover plant design, featuring two blossoms extending from a leafy stem, surrounded at the base by scrolled swags. Graduated cobalt dashes under each handle and heavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A well-decorated example with excellent color. This jar is the first we have seen bearing this particular decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in a Baltimore family to the consignor. Excellent condition with one small rim chip, minor nicks to base, and a small shallow base chip, which is glazed-over and occurred in-the-firing.
