Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Tulip Decoration and Lid, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with flared rim, footed base, and applied tab handles, heavily-decorated with three brushed tulips extending up both sides. Unusual V-shaped brushwork under each handle. Includes a lid with cobalt foliate decoration, which is Baltimore or possibly Philadelphia, second quarter 19th century. A beautiful jar with great form and decoration. 1" in-the-firing separation in rim. A hairline extending across underside and 1" up base of jar. A few minor base chips. Lid with 1 1/2" hairline on underside, extending from a small chip to flange, as well as a 1 1/4" area of wear to flange.
