Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "JA & CW UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, NY," circa 1865, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed bird with heavily-shaded head and back, perched on a leafy stem. 7 3/4" Y-shaped hairline to right of bird. Rust staining on reverse. Shallow chipping to flange on interior of rim. Faint 2 1/2" hairline from rim on front, partially visible on interior. Base chips, which appear to be in-the-firing, the largest measuring 1 1/4" long.
