Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1875, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, spotted breast, and fan-shaped tail, perched on the branch of a large, heavily-shaded stump. Stump is surrounded by profuse slip-trailed shrubs and ground cover. This churn exhibits a wonderful figural design, as well as some of the best color and contrast we have seen on a piece by New York Stoneware Company. Includes original Albany-slip-glazed lid. Excellent condition with some drips of staining to surface and minor nicks to inner rim where a lid would rest. Lid in excellent condition.
