Very Rare Stoneware Gemel with Incised Bird Decorations, Stamped Twice "NEW-HAVEN," Absalom Stedman or Stedman & Seymour, New Haven, Connecticut, circa 1830, conjoined ovoid jugs, each decorated with a folky incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with ringed-neck and impressed circular eye. Brushed cobalt band between jugs. One jug incised "R," while other is incised "W," possibly to denote "Rum" and "Whiskey". Impressed on each jug with the cobalt-highlighted stamp "NEW-HAVEN," used by Absalom Stedman and Frederick Seymour in New Haven, CT, circa 1830. A highly-prized stoneware form with superb decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Pennsylvania collection. Restored handle, including added blue to the handle terminals. Some restoration to spout area. In-the-firing line at base where jugs are joined. H 9 5/8".
