Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Design and 1823 Date, attributed to Nicholas van Wickle, Old Bridge, NJ, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled collar, semi-squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated on one side with the brushed cobalt date "1823," underscored by a brushed flourish. Reverse decorated with a stylized tulip blossom. Various characteristics of the jar match sherd evidence excavated from the Van Wickle Pottery. Provenance: Ex-Philip H. Bradley Co. Antiques. Restored 2" section to rim chips on tulip-decorated side. Otherwise excellent condition.
