Rare Lidded Stoneware Bowl with Applied Floral Decoration and Snake Finial, Southern U.S. origin, late 19th century, tapered, salt-glazed bowl, the clay handles in the form of rings of twisted rope. Raised, salt-glazed lid with applied vine border including flowers composed of darker clay with impressed rosette center. Handle in the form a hand-molded coiled snake with twisted center. A highly unusual and imaginative form. Bowl missing most of one handle, with a 1 1/8" chip to edge of underside and additional minor chips to bottom edge. Lid with some losses to applied vine decoration, and a 2 3/4" hairline to top of lid, extending down side of lid and connecting to a 7/8" chip on flange on underside. Some additional small chips to flange on underside of lid, and a 1 1/2" chip to edge of lid. An additional 5/8" loss to part of braided section of snake. H (to top of lid) 6 1/4" ; Diameter (of bowl) 7 3/8".
