Rare Anna Pottery Stoneware World's Fair Pig Flask with Facial Variant, Dated 1893, attributed to Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, molded in the form of a reclining pig with Albany-slip-glazed surface, opening at rear, and incised details to hooves and nostrils, the pig's side incised "From the Worlds Fair / with a little good Old Rye in / 1893". Reverse incised "Cut Rates to Chicago". The incised "cuts" in the pig's testicles make this incised slogan an obvious pun. This bottle was created from a different mold than we have seen before, with a particularly well-detailed, almost human-like face to the pig. This difference is largely noticeable in the plump, dimpled cheeks, detailed molding around the eye sockets, and raised circular eyes. The fact that this pig descended in the Kirkpatrick family suggests this bottle may have been made from a rarely-used or special mold. Provenance: From a Mid-Atlantic collection, purchased in the 1970's from a direct descendant of the Kirkpatrick family. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor, 1/8" in-the-firing line in pouring spout, along with a miniscule nick and light roughness to spout. L 6 1/4".
