Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Frog Paperweight, Singed "Anna Pottery / 1887," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, molded figure of a frog with incised details to face and feet, seated atop a heavily-incised, circular base. Eyes, mouth, and base, accented with cobalt slip. Underside incised "Anna Pottery / 1887". Excellent, cream-colored clay ground. Frog features well-detailed, bulging eyes. The distinctive Anna frog form is typically found adorning clamshell-based inkwells and mugs. The two Anna frogs offered in this sale, both found together, are the only examples with this style of base we have seen, and likely served as paperweights. Provenance: Recently found in Delaware. Excellent condition. H 2 1/2" ; L 3 1/4".
