Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, short, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a man's face with long nose, flanked by leaves. A scarce design in its own right, examples of this desirable Cowden & Wilcox motif are very rare on a butter crock form. Professional restoration to an approximately 3 1/4" area of rim. An additional minor rim chip. A shallow chip to one handle. A 1 1/4" flake to underside.
