Fine Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1800, finely-potted jug of highly-ovoid form, with tooled foot, heavily-tooled neck, and rounded spout. Front impressed with the large and impressive maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr., including a deeply-incised foliate design below and stylized incised flower blossom above. Impressed maker's mark embellished with brushed cobalt stripes, the top and bottom lines of the impressed mark joined by an additional curving cobalt stripe. Excellent size and decoration. One of the finest Crolius jugs we have ever offered. Professionally-restored handle. Additional professional restoration to spout area. Band of restoration to shoulder, as well as a band of restoration extending from side of jug to right of maker's mark, onto reverse under handle. Series of short lines to shoulder. Some additional faint lines to surface, typical of Manhattan stoneware. A few fairly typical stone pings to reverse. Minor nicks to base. H 9 3/4".
