Scarce Stoneware Jar with Cobalt People Decoration, Incised on Underside "Wm. Bu. . .," attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with two brushed human figures standing beside a tree. Unusual drape-like brushwork arching above the decoration. Impressed Morgantown three-gallon capacity mark below rim. Underside incised with a partial name, "Wm. Bu. . .," the presumed potter of the jar. Provenance: From a long-term PA antiques collection, purchased approximately thirty-five years ago. Rim slumped during the firing. Red wax-like residue to rim on residue. 1 1/4" base chip. Some fry to cobalt.
