Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, the midsection with heavily-incised banding. Surface heavily-decorated with fuchsia vines at shoulder, several freehand stripes throughout, vining to bottom section, and the number "6" in script at base, surrounded by brushed dots and flanked by additional vining. Staining to surface. Some light wear to surface. Hairlines in underside. Hairlines in one handle. Minor chip to shoulder molding on reverse. Minor chip to end of one handle. Small base chip.
