Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn, Stenciled "HAMILTON & ROBBINS / MANUFACTURERS / OF BEST BLUE / STONEWARE / NEW GENEVA, PA," circa 1905, cylindrical churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall collar and rounded rim. Front featuring the stenciled maker's mark of the firm Hamilton & Robbins, below a boldly-stenciled "3" flanked by flourishes. Excellent form and crisp stenciling on a piece made at the last stoneware pottery of the Upper Monongahela Valley. Literature: Pictured in Phil Schaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 172. The caption for this example describes the churn as "bearing one of this company's best decorations". Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1 1/2" glazed-over ping on side of churn, some very minor surface wear to reverse, and a two tiny nicks on ledge on interior of rim, where a lid would rest.
