Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Gemel, Stamped "NEW-HAVEN," attributed to Absalom Stedman or Stedman & Seymour, New Haven, Connecticut, circa 1830, pair of conjoined jugs with squat, ovoid form, tooled shoulder, and semi-rounded rim. Heavily-ribbed handle at midsection. Cobalt accents to "NEW-HAVEN" maker's marks on each jug, as well as heavy cobalt brushwork where the jugs meet. This example is somewhat smaller than most New Haven gemels known, and each jug is also somewhat more ovoid that one typically finds on New Haven examples. An outstanding and highly-prized form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Connecticut. Excellent, as-made condition with a few glazed-over chips to handle. H (to top of handle) 7 3/8" ; H (to top of jugs) 6 5/8".
