Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Jug with Diagonally-Impressed "Clamshell" Decoration, attributed to Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, approximately three or four gallon jug with heavily-tooled neck, rounded spout, and ribbed handle, the front decorated with three impressed "clamshell" motifs, highlighted in cobalt slip. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of the largest Commeraw jugs we have seen. Highly unusual diagonal orientation to impressed decoration. Provenance: Ex-Robert J. Sim Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some minor chipping to bottom edge. H 15 3/4".
