Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to J.P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and large lug handles, decorated with a flowering vine on front and back, each bearing two circular blossoms. Brushed cobalt highlights along outer edge of handles and accenting the handle terminals. An iron ping to one handle. Opposite handle with iron ping, associated in-the-firing crack, and shallow chip. Wear to rim. Some nicks to shoulder molding. Scattered wear to surface. Surface lines emanating from base of jar, not visible on interior. 1/2" iron ping to side of jar. A large flake on interior wall of jar.
