Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird on Branch Decoration, Inscribed "Bird," New York State origin, third quarter 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a bird with upswept tail, perched on a flowering branch. Inscribed in cobalt script "Bird" on shoulder. Rare inscription on a desirable, small-sized jar. Excellent condition with typical wear to interior of rim where a lid would rest, as well as some in-the-firing shallow chips to edge on underside.
