Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITE & WOOD / BINGHAMTON, N.Y.," circa 1880, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a very large brushed and slip-trailed bird with paddle-shaped tai, perched on a morning glory vine. Excellent color and impressive size of decoration. One of the finest-decorated jugs we have seen bearing this classic White family design from Utica and Binghamton, NY. Interestingly, this jug was found with the other four-gallon paddletail bird jug in this auction on a porch in Binghamton in the 1940s. Surprisingly enough, both jugs began life together and were fired side-by-side in the same kiln firing. The evidence is visible in three distinct contact marks on opposing sides of each jug. A beautifully-decorated example of New York State stoneware with a wonderful history. Vertical group of four chips / contact marks on right side of jug. Handle broken into three sections and reglued, which includes section of reverse side of spout. Large recessed area on left side of jug at base with dark brown coloration and 3 1/2" section of clay residue adhered to body of jug. Tight 6" line at base. Spot of fry to cobalt at tip of bird's beak.
