Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on large tree stump. Heavy feather detail to pheasant's body, shading to left side of tree, and detailed ground cover at base. Unusual and desirable four-gallon size. Some fry to cobalt. A small nick to edge of spout. A shallow chip to top of spout, which appears to be in-the-firing. A base chip and a few shallow chips to underside at edge.
