Exceptional Early Anna Pottery Stoneware Snake Jug, Incised "Little Brown Jug / Anna Ill / 1877," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, highly-ovoid jug with rounded foot and tooled shoulder, the handle in the form of a large finely-scaled snake with dramatically-curved body. Surface covered in a chocolate brown Albany slip glaze. Base with unusual and early inscription "Little Brown Jug / Anna Ill / 1877". This example features perhaps the finest, most well-detailed snakes we have seen on an Anna jug of this size and style. The skillfully-executed snake, early date, and scarce "Anna, Ill" signature, all contribute to making this example one of the best little brown snake jugs we have ever offered. Snake with reglued head. Base chip to jug. Jug and snake in otherwise excellent condition. H 4 1/2".
