Scarce Two-Gallon Western PA Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "P. EILER / EAST / BIRMINGHAM / POTTERY," Pittsburgh, PA origin, circa 1863-1873, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the boldly-stenciled signature "P. EILER / EAST / BIRMINGHAM / POTTERY". According to Schaltenbrand's Big Ware Turners, this mark was used by Philip Eiler prior to 1873, at which point the stenciled mark incorporated the word "PITTSBURGH". Thin horizontal crack extending around base and onto underside. 1 1/4" chip to interior of rim and a minor nick to interior of rim.
