Very Rare Dauphin County, PA Redware Poem Bank, Signed "Made by / A.J. Bressler / 1873," ovoid bank with rounded foot, vertically-carved slot, and button-shaped finial with pointed tip. Shoulder embellished with sawtoothed and banded incising. Body incised with the poem "Remember the tweens / Leave them not alone / Do not pass them by unheeded". An incised chainlink design below slot may refer to the fraternal organization of the Oddfellows. Surface covered in a mottled and flecked lead and manganese glaze. Signed and Dated on Underside "Made by / A.J. Bressler / 1873". Census records indicate Bressler was active in Washington Township, Dauphin County, PA during the latter part of the 19th century. Excellent form by a rare maker featuring a wonderful incised inscription. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a long-term folk art collection. Large reglued section at shoulder, measuring approximately 3 3/4" x 2 1/2". Damage above slot, along with two chips to top of slot. Wear to finial. Wear to base, including one base chip. H 5 1/4".
