Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Fish Decoration, Albany, NY origin, early 19th century, three-gallon ovoid jug with rounded foot and heavily-tooled neck, the front decorated with a large and folky incised design of a fish with upswept tail and angered expression including open mouth with teeth. Similarly-style fish designs can be found on signed examples of Albany, NY stoneware. A great decoration, somewhat larger than most incised fish known. Numerous base chips. 1/2" chip to top of handle, possibly in-the-making. A few very minor spots of wear to surface. Otherwise as-made condition.
