Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Bowl, Stamped "HEART & CROFT," Chambersburg, PA origin, circa 1870, large-sized bowl with heavily-tooled shoulder and thick, semi-squared rim, the interior covered in a speckled light brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Impressed along the side with the elusive maker's mark, "HEART & CROFT," used during the partnership of potters, J.M. Heart and David Croft, in Chambersburg, PA, circa 1870. This bowl is the only example bearing this maker's mark we have seen, and only the second signed example of any form by this potting firm we have ever offered. Signed redware bowls from the Shenandoah Valley region are very difficult to find. Provenance: Recently found in Southcentral Pennsylvania. Hairline from rim. In-the-firing roughness to rim. Large in-the-firing chip / stone ping to exterior of rim. Some scratches to interior. Hairline from rim. Diameter 14 3/4" ; H 4 1/4".
