Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Number 5 Decoration, Stamped "PAUL : CUSHMANS," Albany, NY origin, circa 1810-1815, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with five brushed cobalt number 5's (two on the front and three on the reverse). Midsection coggled with the large Albany, NY mark of Paul Cushman, boldly-brushed in cobalt slip. A fine example of Albany, NY stoneware, featuring an unusual decoration and excellent color. 7 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Some minor base chips, and a few minor rim nicks. Otherwise excellent condition.
