Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & CO," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, cylindrical jar with tooled and rounded shoulder and thick rounded rim, decorated with a brushed cobalt floral design including a stylized circular blossom surrounding the maker's mark with foliate trails extending from it to the left and right. Incised on the underside with the letter "M," possibly for potter, Benedict C. Milburn. A more unusual jar form for H. Smith & Co stoneware, featuring excellent, classic Alexandria decoration. A few base chips. Cracks at base, forming a tight spidering crack on underside.
