Important and Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANN / ALEXA," VA origin, circa 1820, thin-walled, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a stylized flowering plant featuring a circular blossom encompassing the maker's mark and leafy trails extending to the left and right. Reverse decorated with a cobalt leaf, and heavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This exceptional jar is possibly the finest example of Swann stoneware we have ever offered. It exhibits the best color of any Swann piece we have seen, and features the classic Alexandria floral design. This design, while introduced by Swann, is considered rare on his work, as few of his pots were cobalt-decorated. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in the consignor's family. Rarely-found excellent condition with minor base chips.
