Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tulip Decoration, attributed to Philip Kabis, Shirleysburg, PA, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on both sides with tulip motifs extending from a leafy stem, applied over a slip-coated surface. Handles decorated with cobalt dashes. Three dashes additionally brushed under each handle. Wear to slip on one side, possibly in-the-firing. Large X-shaped crack on one side, with slivers of clay missing at center of crack. 2 1/4" rim chip and another small rim chip. Short crack at base.
