Extremely Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Large Cobalt Floral Design, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1875, beehive-form with acorn-shaped finial and applied semi-circular watering trough at base. Front and back decorated with a large brushed cobalt flower extending from a heavily-leafed stem. Brushed cobalt highlights at the sides of the watering trough. A highly unusual form for this maker. Chip to bottom edge of trough. 4 1/4" tall inverted Y-shaped crack at base on reverse, with one section of crack extending onto underside. Small, shallow chip to finial on reverse. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from New Jersey. H 11 3/4".
