Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Insect Decoration, Stamped "BURGER & LANG / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, thick semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a highly unusual design of a flying insect, detailed with cross-hatched wings, its body with heavily-shaded ends and spotted center. Slip-trailed script 5 above. This crock is the only example from Rochester with insect decoration that we have seen. Staining to surface. Chips to end of one handle. A few small chips to opposite handle. H 13".
