Rare Glazed Redware Commemorative Jar with Lid, Dated 1788, probably Philadelphia, PA origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with ribbed strap handles, heavily tooled shoulder and base, and including its original domed lid. Jar decorated with daubs of manganese over a mottled green, orange, and yellowish ground. Original lid with similar glazing over an orange ground. Underside of jar and lid featuring incised date "1788," likely commemorating an important date and not referring to the jar's date of manufacture. Excellent form and color. A similar commemorative jar, dated on the underside "1715," but made during the first half of the 19th century, is currently in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, pictured in Garvan's "The Pennsyvania-German Collection," p. 228, figure 21. Overall very nice condition. Wear to rim. Chips to edge of lid. Some chipping to base, mostly shallow and small. Wear to edge of one handle. H (including lid) 10 1/2".
