Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar, Stamped "MADE BY J. LETTS," South Amboy, NJ origin, early 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded foot, heavily-tooled shoulder, and rounded rim, decorated with two impressed drapes or crescents, filled with reddish-brown manganese glaze. Area above decoration features the scarce impressed signature of South Amboy potter, Joshua Letts. Unusual and appealing small size. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from Virginia. Two 5" cracks from rim and a 1 1/2" hairline from rim. Base chips. A 1 1/4" chip on underside at edge of jar. Contact mark at rim. Crack extending from underside approximately 5 1/2" up side of jar. H 8 1/4".
