Rare Quart-Sized Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Northeastern U.S., 18th century, finely-potted ovoid jug with heavily-tooled neck and base, the shoulder decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt "watchspring" design embellished with swag-like trails. Stoneware featuring this distinctive design was made in the mid to late 18th century in New Jersey, Manhattan, and Connecticut. The flattened spout and dark color on this example suggest it may possibly be a States piece from Manhattan. Provenance: From a forty-year private collection. Restoration to handle. Heavy chipping to base. Chipping to spout. H 8 1/4".
