Exceptional Slip-Decorated Redware Shaving Mug, American, possibly Baltimore, MD or Morgantown, WV origin, early 19th century, with applied dish, tooled midsection, and ribbed handle, the surface covered in a dark brown lead-base glaze augmented with iron or manganese, the body lavishly-decorated with green slip spots and a leaf, the dish decorated with a wavy band of green-colored slip. The use of colorful spots of glaze over a dark ground is often associated with the work of Morgantown, WV potters. The style of the dark glaze on this example is also similar to that found on redware shards excavated in Baltimore, MD. Given that this mug was found in the Baltimore area, it may be of local origin.
