Outstanding and Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Cornucopia Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and wide spout, decorated with large, heavily-shaded cornucopia, brimming with a large daisy, tulips, leaves, corkscrewing vines, and other circular blossoms. Excellent color and visually-stunning design. One of a very small number of Cowden & Wilcox pieces with cornucopia decoration known. Provenance: Recently discovered in a Central Pennsylvania basement. Remarkable as-made condition with some light bubbling to cobalt of central flower, and two in-the-making base chips on reverse. H 16 1/2".
